Businesses Use First Astronaut in Marketing

Yi So-Yeon, an astronaut left to the space on April 8, 2008 in Korea time. Most Koreans are having interest on her because she is the first astronaut from Korea. Korea would be the 37th country in the world sending an astronaut into space. Businesses started using this historic event as their marketing strategy.

Department Stores.
Department stores like Lotte Department Store opened a "Lotte space world" event, which is exhibiting including mock ups of Soyuz space shuttle and space food which Yi took to space. They will choose a couple to have a chance to travel Las Vegas, where the movie "Apollo 13" was filmed. The couple is able to have experience on zero gravity at the set. Lotte Department Store also gives a watch used by astronauts called Aviator to customers for a present. Hyundai Department Store is similar to Lotte Department Store. They present customers with astronaut food including Korean traditional food Kimchi. Retail chain stores are expecting large economic benefits because of the astronaut boom. They are promoting telescopes of astronaut, science books, and toys related to space.

Financial Business.
Some financial businesses are also please to join. The Soyuz rocket will be launched at Cosmodrome Baikonur in Kazakhstan. Hanwha Securities did not miss this chance because they launched a fund investing in Kazakhstan. They will holding an event including tour package to Kazakhstan and gift vouchers.

Government.
The government is also taking a chance to encourage teenagers to study science and technology. This trip could be a turning point to set up a basis for Korea to forward in the space industry.

Opinion.
I think this is the part of promotion in marketing. It needs to process quickly because this is short term of marketing. The customers will lose interest as the time goes by. I expect the economic benefit will be huge because it can work in both domestic and internationally. Heo Hee-Young, who is a professor at Korea Aerospace University estimated that the first astronaut will brings about 478 billion won. It is 18 times more than the budget of the project. Businesses are having a same marketing idea right now. The way how they appeal to customers will be the main issue.
