Foreigners Can Run Hotels, Saunas in FEZs

On Tuesday, the government permits foreign to run hotels and spas at medical centers. They already operated hospitals in the free economic zones (FEZs). The Ministry of Knowledge Economy said, letting foreigners to run hotels, spas, saunas, and tourist facilities will help to attract more visitors from overseas. This is the latest bill after letting individual foreign investors and institutional investors invest in the domestic hospital. The New York Presbyterian Hospital is planning to open a 600 bed hospital in the Songdo FEZ near Incheon International Airport by the end of this year. Incheon, Busan-Jinhae, and Gwangyang are FEZs, where foreigners are able to operate schools, hospitals, and even get tax breaks. The government is scheduling to add more to make bilingual English-Korean cities and they are expecting to get benefits from it.

Opinion.
We talked about Songdo, and Incheon FEZs in the class. They do not do good jobs on foreigner cities because Koreans are more than foreigners in the international city and the most investors are also Koreans. I think we need to do a lot of research not to fail like Euro Disney. The government should focus on Songdo and Incheon rather than expanding more FEZs. To have international hospital, hotels, and saunas is a good idea because Thailand (from a documentary we saw in class) is earning much foreign currency by an international hospital including tourism, massage, and accommodations. We should make Songdo FEZ like Thailand. We are a step forward because we made $61.6 million from foreign patients in 2007, according to Korean medical institutions. Now, we have to use this merit of FEZ to attract more foreigners to come back again to Korea.
